Shortly before 16:30-hours on Wednesday afternoon March 23, Northwest BCFD companies were dispatched for a reported dwelling fire at address 5229 Reisterstown Road in the Arlington area of Northwest Baltimore. Engine Co.46 (running Reserve Squad 88) and Truck Co.27 (running Reserve Truck 43) first due companies from the Hilltop Station located 5500 Reisterstown arrived in first on scene reporting heavy smoke showing from a vacant 2-story house of a duplex. As soon as the 5th Battalion arrived and took in command, he requested a working fire dispatch. As conditions worsened in the vacant house and the fire began to extend to the other house (5227 which was occupied) of the duplex and the adjacent structure, command radioed into communications to dispatch a 2nd alarm to scene. Due to the deteriorating structural conditions of the vacant house, command also ordered all firefighters to evacuate the fire building and go to exterior operations only. It took nearly two hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries, and the fire's cause is currently under investigation.
